Richard Itaman is Assistant Professor in Sustainability, Economics and Policy at the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) in the School of Earth and Environment (SEE), University of Leeds. He is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in Industrial Policy and Structural Transformation in Africa at the South African Research Chair in Industrial Development (SARChI), University of Johannesburg and International Advisory Board Member of Revaluing Care in the Global Economy, University of Duke, North Carolina. His research is in financial development, sustainable finance, industrial policy and structural transformation, macroeconomics, and the political economy of development in Africa. His research has been published in leading peer review journals.

Before joining the University of Leeds, he led the research on the feasibility of creating a fossil-free bond index at Jesus College, University of Cambridge. He was also Lecturer in Comparative Political Economy and Development, at King’s College London; Lecturer in Development Economics at the University of Bath; and taught at the University College London (UCL), School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He has consulted for the Commonwealth office and worked at the United Nations Development Programme. He holds a PhD in Economics and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK.
